The Flagler Volusia Public Leadership Institute (FVPLI) is a free nonpartisan candidate-training program hosted by the Flagler County and Daytona Regional Chambers of Commerce. Led by industry expert and facilitator Mark Mills of Mills Strategic Communications, FVPLI is offered to classes of aspiring candidates every two years to provide tools, education, insight and guidance to run for public office. This four-day program, funded by generous community and business sponsors, takes place September 8, 9, 15 & 16 at locations in Palm Coast and Daytona Beach. All candidates are asked to complete and submit applications by July 28, and a committee will review applications, choose candidates to interview and ultimately select 20 to 24 local applicants to participate. Any registered voter in Flagler or Volusia may apply, as long as they are not an elected incumbent or a candidate who has already declared or filed to run. Accepted participants will be notified by August 18.
The curriculum focuses on the “nuts and bolts” of running for public office, including filing, choosing a campaign team, conducting “pre-campaign” assessments, voter targeting, developing a campaign plan, communications and fundraising. Drawing on the expertise of industry experts and elected officials, FVPLI helps prospective candidates navigate the challenging road to public service with greater confidence.
If you know someone who would make an outstanding elected official in the future, this is the program to help them make that next step. Please encourage them to apply.
